Ornament Punch Rose Tutorial

by Becky Jensen on March 10, 2010

Vintage Vogue Stamp Set

This is a remake of a tissue box that I showed you last week.  I promised you a tutorial for the rose and it’s time!

Stampin' Up! Ornament Punch

I started with 25 ornament punches in Whisper White.  The more punches you have the fuller your rose will be.  The ornament punch was offered by Stampin’ Up! in the Holiday Mini Catalog but I have good news for you!  The punch is not pictured in any of the current catalogs, however, it is still available!  The item number is 116794 and it costs $15.95.

Sponging with Pretty in Pink

I want the rose to have two tones so I am sponging the edges of the punches with Pretty in Pink Classic ink.

Embossing Stylus

I used a stylus to curl the edges of each ornament punch (petal).  You want about 1/3 of the petals to be curled slightly, 1/3 curled so they look like a U when you look from a side view, 1/3 curled considerably and 1 totally curled.  Is that as clear as vellum for you?  Let me give you a picture that will hopefully define that better.

Ornament Punch Rose Petals

I hope that makes more sense now.  For the tighter curls I grabbed a thin paint brushed to wrap the punches around.

1 3/4" Circle Punch

Punch a 1 3/4″ Circle and then start working around the circle to adhere the petals.  Begin with the least curled petals.  I am using Sticky Strip because I want to make sure once all the weight of the flower is added it’s going to stay in place.

Work in a circle

Continue working around the circle to attach the petals.  Use up all of the least curled petals and then work to the next level saving the most curled for the end.

Ornament Punch Rose Coming into Shape

As you get closer to the center of the flower you’ll want to make the edges of your petals overlap more, this will help to lift them up and give the flower shape.

Paper Rose

There is just one more piece to insert, the most curled petal.  You will know when it’s time to put in the last petal, it’ll be the last one you can possibly fit in there.  I started with 25 petals and used 23 of them.

Paper Rose

The rose looks great but it is no complete without some leaves to frame it.

Ornament Punch Leaves

I punched out three of the ornament punches from Mellow Moss and then used an Always Artichoke Stampin’ Write marker to draw in the vein lines.

Creating a paper leaf

I sponged on some Always Artichoke Classic ink and then used paper snips to cut a zig zag edge on of the leaves.

Bottom of the flower

Tuck the leaves behind the flower.  (This a view of the bottom of the finished project.)

Paper Rose made from the Stampin' Up! Ornament Punch

And here we are!  What do you think?  I know the  tutorial is long and may seem like it would take a long time to make one of these but I can tell you that it really doesn’t take all that long.  I spent way more time typing this tutorial than it takes to make one of these flowers!

Now obviously with all these layers you’re not going to be able to put this flower on a card and mail it.  A rose like this one is meant for a good size 3-D project or at least a card you’re planning to hand deliver!  I have seen some other versions of this flower, some of them with fewer petals making it less bulky.  You may wish to check them out, the ladies offering them are: Chera Wiest (who originally inspired me), Shawna MacKenzie, and Rhea Anderson.

If you have any questions or comments about making this flower please leave them in the form of a comment.  Most likely if you have questions someone else has the same one so I’ll answer them there for you.  Thank you for stopping by and for any and all comments!

Is it really the last day of the blog tour?  I have so much more trash waiting to become treasures!  Today we’re turning to the tissue box.  Now to be truthful, this is the not exact tissue box I worked with, I was so anxious to get working on it that I didn’t take a picture before beginning.  The one I changed was striped.

Vintage Vogue Stamp Set

Here’s the treasure I made!  This seemed like a good chance to try out one of these special roses I’ve been seeing and of course use one of my favorite stamp sets, Vintage Vogue.

Pretty in Pink Grosgrain Ribbon

The colors I used for the box are Bravo Burgundy, Always Artichoke, Mellow Moss, Whisper White and Pretty in Pink.  I did also use some Chocolate Chip ink to sponge onto the Bravo Burgundy but you’re not going to be able to tell that very well in the pictures.

Ornament Punch

The flower is made out of Whisper White cardstock and the Ornament Punch.  I used a sponge and some Pretty in Pink classic ink to tint the petals.

Inside the box

Would you believe, I was just crazy enough to cover the whole box, inside and out.  By doing so the box is pleasant to look at from any angle but it is also much sturdier.  Now there are at least three layers over every inch of the box so it’s going to be able to withstand much more weight than a regular tissue box.

Clear block storage

There are so many things that can be stored in this special little box.  In the first picture I had a bunch of handmade cards in there, they fit perfectly.  Here you can see that I have our new clear blocks in there.  The entire set fits with a little more room left for extras even.

Beautiful Wings Birthday Card

I decided to design a card that would work well inside the box and be fairly easy to duplicate.  Now I didn’t get enough of these made to fill the box, it’s just an idea.  This is a card we’re going to be making at my card class on Monday evening.

Teeny Tiny Wishes Stamp Set

To make this card I used the Bella Toile and Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp sets, Very Vanilla Hodgepodge Hardware, Chocolate Chip Satin ribbon, one of the Stampin’ Up! Backgrounds I texturz Plates, Little Leaves sizzlet die and the Beautiful Wings Embosslit Die.

Thank you for stopping by to visit again!  I hope you  continue to come back to check in once in awhile as I try to post new projects daily.

**I have had a lot of requests for a tutorial for the rose.  Sure!  Please come back on Wednesday, March 10 and I will have one for you! **

Please take the time to continue through the tour and visit Sandi next!

Remaking Trash into Treasure with Stampin’ Up!

by Becky Jensen on March 5, 2010

I have another fun project for you today. I’ve taken my trash (and some my friend brought me to saying she knew I’d find something to do with it) and turned it into a treasure. Yesterday I took a dry oatmeal container and small cookie tin to create the what you see below.

Not Quite Navy & Chocolate Chip

See any changes?  These are going to be in the StampThat classroom now holding various goodies!  I’m showing these containers holding cups and plastic-ware but really they could be used to hold so many things!  The little one could hold pens and pencils or candy.  The large one could hold so many different items and goodies I can’t even begin to list them!

Three types of Stampin' Up! Chocolate Chip Ribbon

I used three different kinds of ribbon on here.  The stitched felt ribbon you see on here is no longer available in the Idea Book & Catalog, however, if you visit your demonstrator’s online ordering, it is listed on the Clearance Rack!  It is part of the Alpine Ribbon Originals.  (I should put in that the ribbon looks great with the Sweet Pea Stitched Felt too!)  The other ribbons are Chocolate Chip Double Stitched Grosgrain and narrow grosgrain.

Bella Bleu DSP and Scallop Circle Dies

I made the flower using the Bella Bleu Designer Series Paper and our two Scallop Circle Dies with the Big Shot.  Between our two Scallop Circle Dies we have three different sizes of circles and I used all three of those sizes.  The flower is held together with one of our jumbo brads.

Very Vintage Jumbo Wheel

I used the Very Vintage jumbo wheel to roll Chocolate Chip craft into onto the Not Quite Navy cardstock.  For this smaller container I skipped the middle piece of ribbon so I wouldn’t cover up all the Not Quite Navy cardstock.

Very Vanilla Hodgepodge Hardware

This smaller flower is made with the smallest Circle Scallop Die and then our Scallop Circle Punch.  They are very similar in size but the punch is a little smaller.  The pieces of flower are held together with a brad from the Very Vanilla Hodgepodge hardware.

To me, the stitched felt ribbon is what makes these projects.  Being thick, it gives an extra dimension to the containers and finishes off the edges.

Cottage Walls DSP

I thought I’d go ahead and make a second set to show you.  This time I used the Cottage Walls DSP with Rich Razzleberry and Old Olive ribbons.  In the center of these flowers I used a Filigree Brad (page 179 of the Idea Book & Catalog).

Handmade paper flower

Do you see the difference in the containers where the Rich Razzleberry ribbon is compared to the stitched felt?  These just don’t look as “elegant” to me but then I prefer the elegant look to bright and fun I guess.

What do you think?  Which set is your favorite?  Think I should go into business remaking oatmeal boxes?  I’d love to hear what you think!

Thank you for taking the time to stop by.  I hope you will continue on the tour to visit Sandi Johnson!

Going Green Blog Tour Day 1

by Becky Jensen on March 3, 2010

Yummy, yummy!

Welcome to day one of the Going Green Blog Tour!  Do you like Lindor Truffles?  I do!  They’re so very yummy and sometimes they come in these lovely boxes!  It’s just too nice of a box, I have to be “green” and reuse it!  Check out the change!

Kind & Caring Thoughts Hostess Set

What do you think?  Did it change a little bit?!  It is possible to make these easel card boxes without having a chocolate box (in fact, I’ll be offering a class on this in the next couple months as some of you have requested) but I’ve found if I have one of these truffle boxes around it sure is easy!

Beautiful Wings Embosslit Die

I covered the box with pieces of Almost Amethyst on which I embossed in white with the Kind & Caring Thoughts stamp set which is available as a level 3 hostess set in the Idea Book & Catalog.  Because the box already has a nice gold border around it, I decided to leave some of the gold showing.

I love the fact that the truffle box already has a built in drawer to it!  I simply added one of our jumbo brads for a little handle and it works great!  I used those same jumbo brads to keep the “easel” in place.

Lined drawer

I dressed the inside of the drawer up just a little by placing a square of Almost Amethyst inside instead of just leaving it white at the bottom.

Handstamped Post It Note

The drawer could be used to hold numerous items like candy (I already ate the truffles though!!!) or jewelry or simple stationary items.  I thought it would be fun to put in this handstamped Post It note pad.  Yes, I did go through and stamp every page, it really doesn’t take that long!

Trash to Treasure

So, there’s my treasure made from my trash!

Totally Tess Stamp Set

Here’s another transformed truffle box that I made about a month ago for my secret sister (hope she’s not looking!)  I used the Totally Tess, Whimsical Words and Warm Words stamp sets along with the Bella Bleu DSP and Night of Navy cardstock for this project.

Inside the drawer

Inside this box I divided the drawer into sections for various stationary pieces and then I gave her a place for her secret stash of goodies!

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing my “green” projects that have absolutely no green on them!  I look forward to any comments you might leave – I always love to read them!  Oh and if you have any truffles, uhhh . . . boxes you want to send my way . . . !

Be sure to continue on the tour to visit Sandi Johnson next!

Big Shot, Vinyl & Tulipe Die

March 3, 2010

I found three of these on clearance the other day.  They are like cork boards but with no cork, it is a canvas fabric to tack items to.  I thought they were really neat, I had a little Christmas money left and surely I could use them . . . .
I decided to use a [...]

Abundant Hope Framed Art

March 2, 2010

I got the idea for this piece of artwork from a fellow stamper named Mary.  It is so incredibly easy and cheap to make!  I used the Abundant Hope stamp set, the Beautiful Wings Embosslit Die, some Mellow Moss Taffeta Ribbon and the Modern Label Punch.
The frame you see is one from a local dollar [...]

Here’s a side view.  It may be hard to tell, but I stamped all of the black cardstock with the swirly in Baroque Motifs and [...]
